Introduction to Art Appreciation and Art History: ideal for the beginner or someone who wants to refresh their interest in art. The course will examine different ways of looking and appreciating art while considering aspects of Art History (with an emphasis on Renaissance and Twentieth Century Art).
Introduction to Modern Art (from the 1860's to the present day): explores the exciting and dynamic changes in art as it echoed, and at times pre-empted a rapidly changing world. This is a must for anyone who is curious about the art of our times and it's not too distant predecessors.
Introduction to Renaissance Art: the achievements of the Renaissance have reverberated down through history and continue to inform many aspects of our world. The course looks at the background to this extraordinary cultural flowering and examines the art and artists that defined the period.
Introduction to Australian Art: Australia can claim an exceptional heritage in the visual arts; the course looks at this heritage from the golden summers of the Heidelberg School to the heroic years of Modernism through to the present day. The course will also consider the impact of outside cultural influences on Australian art.
Traveller's Guide to Art: Off to Europe? Or simply enjoy a little armchair travel? Why not come to a series of informative and entertaining presentations on the artistic highlights of some Europe's most exciting art centres. London, Paris, Rome, Florence and Venice will be the cities in focus. America may also be included depending on the particular groups travel destinations and interests.
Short courses and private classes:
The Story of Venice as seen
through its art: The story of Venice is a unique one, made vivid
to us through its extraordinary artistic achievements; it is here that
history and myth freely mix with the Venetian's innate sense of beauty,
creating some of the world's most stunning art and architecture.
This two week presentation (two hours per week) will examine these works
as you journey through time from the city's modest beginnings to a world
empire.
Highlights of landscape art through the ages – Two hour presentation

The simple aim of all the courses is for the participants to come away with a greater understanding, and thereby, greater appreciation and enjoyment of art. There are no tests and no exams.
The students are encouraged to relax and enjoy the presentations and engage in conversation if they so wish.
The presenter brings thirty years experience to the courses, however he stresses he is not a professional Art Historian and all the courses are to be seen as introductions to particular aspects of art history, notes and reading lists are provided for students who wish to pursue further self determined study.
Beyond these introductory courses it is suggested students may wish to purse study through tertiary institutions.
Fees are usually paid in advance, and your place is confirmed only by payment.
Classes that do not have sufficient minimum numbers enrolled will be cancelled.
A full refund will be provided to all students if a course is cancelled due to insufficient numbers.
Class fees will be refunded if there is a cancellation made by the student before or at five days prior the commencement of the course
Any cancellations made by the student after this date is not eligible for a refund, and fees will not be transferable to another term. Students can give the paid course to a friend. The friend, however, must attend that course and is also subject to these conditions.
In some circumstances it is possible to enroll in a class after the term has commenced.
No refunds will be given for missed classes. No credit is given for missed classes for the cost of enrolment in subsequent terms.
It is sometimes possible for a student to make up for a missed class, at another class time.
This class time will be different from the class time that the student has enrolled in. The student needs to inform Richard Gunning at which class times they are available, if they want to attend a make-up class.
The ability of Richard Gunning to offer any make-up class will depend on the availability of a vacancy in a class that is suitable for that student. There is no absolute guarantee that a suitable class time will be available for the student to attend a make-up class.
Make-up classes are offered entirely at the discretion of Richard Gunning.
